Hey Reader, When I was a little girl in the early 60's my parents both worked shift work. Mom worked days and Dad worked nights, which meant that Dad took care of my sister and me during the day. I have a vivid memory of running errands with my dad on weekday mornings. 💵We went to the Police Department to pick up his pay check. 💈To the barbershop for him to get a haircut. And a piece of bubblegum for us girls. 👮♀️The dry cleaners to pick up his uniform. And finally The Kolache Shoppe (not to be confused with The Kolache Factory or any other modern chains) to get a kolache. These kolache (yes- that's the plural) were authentic Czech kolache made with a sweet yeast dough with either a prune, poppy seed or fresh cheese filling. They also had other fruit varieties and I remember favoring peach. Fun fact: Did you know that Texas had an influx of Czech immigrants in the 19th century? Look at you being a Lifelong Learner.😂 So why am I telling you all this? Because for fun, I got Tony up early on Saturday morning and we drove across town to The Original Kolache Shoppe. The exact same establishment in the same place where Dad took me as a kid. It's run by the 3rd generation of the same family. The only difference is that they have expanded their selection of kolache to accomodate modern tastes and added a cappuccino machine. Quite a step up from the coffee they used to serve from a Bunn coffee maker for a nickel! Never underestimate your mindless scrolling on Instagram. The only reason I even remembered this place is because I saw it on IG. And it's listed as one of the top 15 bakeries in the U.S. by Yelp. So...for FUN this week, take a trip down memory lane and do something that evokes that good memory. If it's a food memory - find or make that food. Or go to the place. Or get out the photo album or yearbook and share it with a person who was there. Miscellaneous ThrivingI've been attending a new church and am making an effort to attend some events so that I can get to know people. It hasn't been hard. This is a smaller church where people make a point to invite you! Ladies Dinner Night Out - Just like it sounds. Dinner at a local restaurant once a month. I've gone twice and had the most fun. Dwell Gathering - Saturday morning women's event with brunch, music, a speaker and a couple of service projects. One of the projects I worked on was writing encouraging notes to students who will go out on missions' projects next month. Lecture by theologian N. T. Wright - Not everyone's cup of tea, I know. But I am interested in theology and Bible study. And I'm an N. T. Wright fan. He was lecturing at the Lanier Theological Library, which is close to my house. I am on their mailing list and heard about the event through their newsletter. It sold out quickly, but they offered a livestream and I was all in. Theology may not be your thing, but I am willing to bet there is a business, library, museum, college or organization that has something to do with things you are interested in. Get on their e-mail lists. You will find all kinds of ways to serve, learn and have fun that you may not have known about otherwise. And lest you think I spend all my time doing church stuff - Tony and I treated ourselves to a performance by the Houston Jazz Orchestra. A long time friend of ours plays in it. We try to go as often as we can! What I boughtI get a lot of feedback that you LOVE the fashion links. But alas, I've hit a dry spell with finding clothes I like recently. So today I bring you two items that have changed my life in the most wonderful way. Products that have organized my pots, pans, lids and Tupperware: Adjustable Food Container Lid Organizer for the Tupperware. Expandable Under Cabinet Pot and Lid Organizer - Why did it take me so long to do this? Back to the food memories - write back and tell me about one of your food memories! I really want to know! Until next time, Cathy Thriving through SERVICE, LEARNING and HAVING FUN! |

I spent most of May watching all the end of year grandkid programs and teaching my 16 year old grandson how to drive. That last one was a lot more time consuming than I anticipated and at times I felt like I had bitten off more than I could chew! One way I survived it was to make a Starbucks run every time we went out...
